007 First Light: Key details on IO Interactive's upcoming stealth action game
007 First Light features a young Bond in explosive, gadget-heavy missions releasing in 2026.

IO Interactive is preparing to launch 007 First Light, a fresh entry in the gaming world that mixes classic James Bond allure with modern action-stealth dynamics. Announced for a 2026 release on platforms including PC, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2, the game promises to offer a detailed exploration of an inexperienced James Bond. The CEO of IO Interactive, Hakan Abrak, highlighted that the game's development draws on two decades of expertise from their work on Hitman, emphasizing a rich gameplay experience that blends action and stealth distinctively adjusted for Bond's world.
In the game, players will assume control of a young Bond described as a "bullet without a target." Unlike his Agent 47 counterpart, Bond operates less covertly, adopting a more reactionary style. Martin Emborg, narrative and cinematic director, elaborated on Bond's style in an exclusive interview, noting the game's focus on direct confrontations and rapid decision-making, contrasting the meticulous planning seen in Hitman.
The storyline, set in contemporary times, initiates with Bond's recruitment following a heroic act in Iceland. Despite his youth and recklessness, he is tasked with eliminating 009, a rogue agent characterized as a "master manipulator." The narrative promises globetrotting missions with locales like Slovakia and other regions hosting crucial 007 encounters with recurring franchise characters such as M, Q, and Moneypenny. In one gripping scene, Bond faces danger in a crocodile pit alongside his mentor Greenway.
Signature Bond-style gadgets are central to 007 First Light's appeal, providing players with high-tech tools. These include a jet engine-activating wristwatch, detective vision for enemy identification, and a wristwatch laser beam, enhancing the espionage experience. Abrak stressed the game's flexibility, allowing players to solve challenges creatively, with options for using stealth, social manipulation, or direct engagement.
Bond's youthful depiction aligns with contemporary expectations — he’s familiar with modern technology, possibly even integrating influences like TikTok into his missions. This incorporation of youthful elements modernizes the narrative, appealing to a diverse audience by blending iconic Bond aesthetics with current digital themes.
