A co-lead on Sora, OpenAI’s video generator, has left for Google
Tim Brooks leaves OpenAI's Sora project for Google DeepMind.
Tim Brooks, previously a co-leader for OpenAI's Sora video generator alongside William Peebles, has announced his move to join Google DeepMind. In his new role, Brooks will focus on video generation and the development of 'world simulators,' as expressed in his social media post.
Brooks' departure from OpenAI comes amid several challenges faced by Sora, including technical setbacks and competition from other systems like those developed by Luma and Runway. For instance, the initial release of the system in February had performance issues, taking over 10 minutes to produce a 1-minute video clip.
Alongside Sora's struggles, OpenAI appears to be losing out on significant partnerships, with competitors securing deals with major studios. Brooks' move follows the resignations of other notable OpenAI figures, signaling a broader trend of leadership changes within the company.
