The decoded patterns can be likened to a phonetic alphabet, revealing surprising levels of communicative complexity among these animals.
The Wild Dolphin Project collaborates with Google experts to implement the DolphinGemma model, designed to comprehend and replicate dolphin speech. This large language model assimilates decades of dolphin vocal data to predict subsequent sounds and generate dolphin-like audio. The DolphinGemma is part of a larger initiative, using technology called Cetacean Hearing Augmentation Telemetry (CHAT) to facilitate interactive exchanges with dolphins, potentially resembling dialogue. This technology opens the door to new understandings but invites debate over the ethics and implications of such interactions.
On land, researchers apply similar methods, such as using the Wav2Vec2 speech model, originally designed for human languages, to interpret dog barks. These models are notably effective, even surpassing those specifically trained on animal data in some cases. Corporations like Baidu are also entering the fray, pursuing patents to translate animal vocalizations, such as those of cats, into human language.
