AMD confirms FSR 4 was co-developed with Sony

AMD and Sony co-developed FSR 4 to enhance gaming upscaling technology.

: AMD has officially announced the co-development of FSR 4 with Sony, highlighting the companies' partnership on this upscaling technology. PlayStation lead architect Mark Cerny introduced Project Amethyst, targeting machine learning and graphics-enhancing CNNs. AMD benefits from Sony's graphic optimization expertise, while Sony utilizes AMD's AI upscaling for consoles. This ongoing collaboration further cements their relationship, seen in AMD's chips powering PlayStation devices.

AMD has confirmed that its latest upscaling technology, FSR 4, was co-developed with Sony, a notable move in the realm of gaming technology. The announcement was made through a post on X, indicating that more innovations from this partnership are on the horizon. FSR, or FidelityFX Super Resolution, is AMD's answer to the need for better resolution and graphics acceleration in digital content, designed to enhance gaming visuals.

Project Amethyst was unveiled by PlayStation's lead architect, Mark Cerny, in December. The aim of this initiative is to bring together AMD and Sony's expertise to create machine learning architectures and convolutional neural networks (CNNs) that specifically enhance gaming graphics. This partnership is pivotal as it combines Sony's strength in gaming technology and AMD's capabilities in developing efficient graphics-enhancing solutions.

It's a strategic alliance allowing both companies to leverage shared machine learning models and training strategies for future products. Sony is expected to incorporate some elements of FSR 4 into its PS5 Pro's AI-accelerated Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR). This incorporation is expected to significantly enhance image clarity and resolution, further boosting Sony's gaming consoles.

For AMD, this collaboration will refine the FSR 4 models, especially in terms of upscaling and anti-lag features on AMD's latest GPUs. The FSR technology has been lauded for its impressive 1440p upscaling capabilities, as detailed in recent reviews, setting a new benchmark for gaming graphics performance. AMD's collaboration with Sony is not a new alliance, as the former has been supplying chips for PlayStation consoles right from the PS4 era.

Currently, AMD is shipping midrange RX 9070 XT and 9070 GPUs that support FSR 4, delivering robust 1440p performance. The RX 9070 XT, priced at $599, features 64 compute units with a boost clock of up to 3GHz. The RX 9070, priced at $549, comes with 56 CUs at up to 2.5GHz. Both models include 16GB of GDDR6 VRAM, enhancing their capabilities for high-performance gaming.
