AMD's new AI-based FSR 4 upscaler impresses in hands-on testing at CES 2025 on RX 9070-series hardware
Impressive AI-based FSR 4 upscaling tech previewed at CES 2025 on AMD's RX 9070-series hardware.

At CES 2025, AMD revealed its AI-based FSR 4 upscaler, marking a shift from its previous hand-tuned analytic methods to machine learning. Digital Foundry's Alex and Oliver tested this technology on RX 9070-series GPUs using the game 'Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart,' noting significant advancements in image quality over FSR 3.1.
The hands-on experience highlighted the AI-based upscaler's ability to preserve fine textures and eliminate artefacts seen in earlier versions. Issues like soft visuals in 1080p to 4K modes and ghosting of fast-moving objects appeared resolved, suggesting FSR 4 may have thoroughly tackled previous challenges.
Despite the promising performance, the technology tested was still in development, running on pre-release hardware without access to settings. With potential ties to Sony's AI advancements, though unlikely, the final version of FSR 4 is anticipated with interest.
