Anysphere introduces a $200 monthly subscription for Cursor AI coding

Anysphere's $200 Ultra plan boosts usage on AI models, enhancing Cursor users' experience.

: Anysphere has launched a new subscription plan for its Cursor AI coding tool, which costs $200 per month and offers users substantially more usage of AI models from providers such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Google DeepMind, and xAI as compared to its $20 plan. This Ultra plan promises priority access to new features and was developed with the help of multi-year partnerships with the AI model providers. The launch follows similar moves by the model providers, who have also rolled out higher-priced subscription plans. Anysphere is rapidly expanding, recently hitting $500 million in annualized recurring revenue with major companies like Nvidia, Uber, and Adobe among its users.

Anysphere has unveiled its latest offering in the AI coding space: a $200-a-month subscription plan named Ultra for its popular tool, Cursor. This move was announced through Anysphere’s official blog and marks a significant enhancement over their existing $20 plan, known as Pro. Ultra users will experience an increment in usage capabilities with access to 20 times more processing power from several esteemed AI model providers, including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google DeepMind, and xAI. This plan includes priority access to upcoming features, indicating a focus on delivering advanced tools to users with heavier demands.

Michael Truell, CEO of Anysphere, emphasized that the Ultra plan materialized due to the company's robust multi-year partnerships with leading AI model developers. Over recent months, the AI community has seen a trend where top-tier providers like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google DeepMind, have introduced price-tiered subscription plans ranging between $100 to $250 monthly. These strategies aim to cater to the needs of power users requiring increased access and capabilities.

The Ultra plan launch coincides with Anysphere’s announcement of achieving a milestone of $500 million in annualized recurring revenue (ARR). This milestone underscores the company's rapid growth trajectory, having swiftly reached $100 million in ARR. Various industry leaders such as Nvidia, Uber, and Adobe now utilize Cursor, further validating the tool's prominence and Anysphere's aggressive market position.

Anysphere's competitive landscape is becoming challenging as AI model providers develop their own coding tools. For instance, OpenAI acquired Windsurf, a competitor of Cursor, while Anthropic is advancing Claude Code, an in-house AI coding solution leveraging Anthropic's AI models. Anthropic has also notably restricted Windsurf's access to its Claude models to weaken OpenAI's advantage in the sector.

In its strategic roadmap, Anysphere is investing in developing proprietary AI models, complementing those from partners like OpenAI and Anthropic. A noteworthy development is the 'Tab' AI model unveiled in May, capable of suggesting code changes across files, showcasing Anysphere's dedication to enhancing AI-driven code application. Jared Kaplan, co-founder of Anthropic, reaffirmed Anthropic's long-term collaboration intentions with Anysphere, despite the heated competition among major players.
