Apple pauses AI notification summaries for news after generating false alerts
Apple halts AI news notifications after complaints of false alerts.

Apple is temporarily suspending AI-generated notification summaries for news and entertainment applications following criticism over inaccurate alerts. The pause comes shortly after a BBC article was wrongly summarized, leading to Apple stating that suspect Luigi Mangione had shot himself, in the case involving UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
In the updated developer previews for iOS 18.3, iPadOS 18.3, and macOS Sequoia 15.3, Apple has entirely stopped notification summaries for news and entertainment apps, with plans to reintroduce them post-refinement. The company is also implementing changes like displaying all notification summaries in italics to help users distinguish them from standard notifications.
Users can now disable notification summaries for each app directly from their Lock Screen. Apple will also begin alerting users that the notification summaries feature is still in beta, and they may encounter errors, as noted in the Settings app. While a public beta is anticipated next week, the general release of iOS 18.3 remains unknown.
