Apple plans 2025 launch for AirTag 2 with enhanced security and range
Apple to release AirTag 2 in 2025 with improved security and range.
Apple is preparing to release the AirTag 2 in mid-2025, nearly four years after the first version's release. The upgrade, internally code-named B589, aims to improve the existing design by offering better range, advanced privacy features, and an enhanced wireless chip.
Recent legal challenges against Apple have highlighted issues of misuse, with a class-action lawsuit accusing Apple of inadequate safety features in the original AirTag. Despite attempts to dismiss the case, a ruling by US District Judge Vince Chhabria allowed the lawsuit to proceed, spotlighting Apple's accountability for third-party misuse.
To address these concerns, Apple has collaborated with Google to introduce a specification known as "Detecting Unwanted Location Trackers." This development enables alerts across iOS and Android devices if unknown Bluetooth trackers are detected, helping Apple maintain its position against competitors like Google and Life360.
