London-based startup Refute is addressing the growing problem of AI-fueled disinformation by providing detection and response solutions specifically for commercial entities. The company has successfully raised a £2.3 million ($2.9 million) pre-seed round, led by UK investors Playfair and Episode 1, to further its mission.

Cofounder and CEO Tom Garnett has an extensive background in national security, having worked at Detica and BAE Systems. His fellow cofounder, Vlad Galu, has hands-on experience combating disinformation from his time building internet infrastructure in Central-Eastern Europe.

Additional investors in Refute's funding round include Notion Capital and Amadeus Capital Partners, as well as notable angel investors Charlie Songhurst, Carlos Espinal, James Chappell, and Alastair Paterson. Competitors in the space such as Alethea, Blackbird AI, and Logically AI focus primarily on detection, whereas Refute differentiates itself by offering both detection and response capabilities.
