Baldur's Gate 3 modders are already using its jailbroken level editor to make the game's first custom maps, including a proof-of-concept level in Hell
Modders are rapidly creating custom maps for Baldur's Gate 3 using a jailbroken level editor, including an Avernus level.
Baldur's Gate 3 modders wasted no time and cracked open the official mod tools within two days to unlock a level editor, enabling the creation of custom maps. A week later, modders like S on YouTube have already showcased a professional take on Avernus, the top layer of the Forgotten Realms' Nine Hells, using assets from various in-game locations to craft a unique environment.
Other modders have joined the initiative, with Lotrich creating a small wilderness area resembling the original party camp and Crucible Gaming offering tutorials on map creation, dialogue, and scripting. A collaborative effort is forming on Discord, aimed at sharing findings and advancing custom content development in the game.
Most of these creations are shown in debug mode within the editor, but Crucible Gaming has demonstrated exporting a map into the main game. While these projects are still proof-of-concept, the rapid progress is significant, suggesting a potential long-term impact on the modding community reminiscent of games like Skyrim and Neverwinter Nights.
