Biden admin snubs Tesla’s $100 million big-rig charging funding request — again

The Biden administration denied Tesla's $100M bid for big-rig charging funding again.

: The Biden administration did not grant Tesla's nearly $100 million request for big-rig charging funds. This decision, announced by the Department of Transportation, saw $636 million allocated to 49 other applicants for electric-vehicle charging infrastructure. Tesla's project, TESSERACT, which sought to connect northern California to Texas, was rejected again despite the company's previous efforts. The funding was intended for a network featuring 750kW chargers for Tesla Semis.

The Biden administration rejected Tesla's request for nearly $100 million for a big-rig charging corridor for the second time. The Department of Transportation announced a $636 million funding round for 49 applicants, but Tesla's application was not included.

Tesla's partner, the South Coast Air Quality Management District, confirmed their submission, as Tesla continues to face challenges with its electric big rig program. Although Tesla has delivered some initial Tesla Semis to companies like Pepsi, the broader commercial plans have not yet been realized.

Initially requested in 2023, Tesla's funding proposal was part of the Charging and Fueling Infrastructure program under a bipartisan law. Despite being excluded from the first two rounds, Tesla remains hopeful for future funding rounds to materialize its TESSERACT project.
