ByteDance is shutting down TikTok Music globally
ByteDance is ending TikTok Music globally by November 2024, impacting users in several countries.
ByteDance announced through its website that it will be closing its music streaming service, TikTok Music, globally on November 28, 2024. The service, which competed with Spotify and Apple Music, was available in countries including Indonesia, Brazil, Australia, Singapore, and Mexico.
The origins of TikTok Music trace back to ByteDance's earlier product, Resso, launched in India and Indonesia in 2019 and later in Brazil. In 2023, Resso users in Brazil and Indonesia were migrated to TikTok Music, expanding subsequently to additional regions, although Resso faced a government ban in India earlier this year.
Despite TikTok's role in driving music popularity and stream counts, ByteDance's music ventures faced hurdles. Notably, conflicts with Universal Music Group over royalties and broader geopolitical issues like potential bans in the U.S. complicated expansion plans, possibly leading to the shutdown decision.
