ChatGPT's image-generation feature receives an upgrade
ChatGPT now generates images with GPT-4o for a Pro plan of $200 monthly.

OpenAI's ChatGPT has undergone a significant upgrade with the incorporation of GPT-4o to facilitate native image generation and modification. This capability elevates the potential of ChatGPT, which previously focused solely on text, offering a new dimension of interaction for users. OpenAI confirmed that this feature is currently accessible to users on their Pro plan, priced at $200 per month, while anticipation builds for its rollout to Plus and free users as well as API developers.
Sam Altman, OpenAI's CEO, highlighted the advanced image generation feature during a live event. The company endeavored to ensure the new feature produces more detailed and refined images than its predecessor, DALL-E 3, offering capabilities such as the alteration and 'inpainting' of images, even those containing people. Such enhancements could see extensive applications across various fields, from creative industries to technical domains.
To train GPT-4o's image processing ability, OpenAI employed publicly available and proprietary data from partners like Shutterstock. However, details of the training data gradually emerge as a contentious issue, with many AI enterprises keeping such information confidential to maintain competitiveness and avoid intellectual property disputes. OpenAI has made commitments to protect artists' rights, ensuring the new system doesn't replicate living artists' styles and facilitating the removal of creator's work from training datasets upon request.
This advancement places OpenAI in line with other industry players like Google, which recently experimented with native image outputs through its Gemini 2.0 Flash model. While this advancement brought attention on social media, it also stirred controversy due to its reportedly lax safeguards, permitting the generation of copyrighted images and removal of watermarks. OpenAI's approach reflects a commitment to ethical considerations in AI development.
Looking ahead, OpenAI's image-generation upgrade dovetails with broader discussions on ethical AI deployment, intellectual property rights, and innovation. As ChatGPT competes with other models, balancing technological progress with respect for creator rights and addressing potential legal issues remains critical for future development. This strategic enhancement not only broadens ChatGPT's capability but also reinforces OpenAI's dedication to responsible AI application.
