China's floating dual-rotor wind turbine is so sturdy it can operate during hurricanes
China's OceanX floating wind turbine, generating 16.6 MW, powers 30,000 homes and survives hurricanes.
MingYang Smart Energy, a company based in Guangdong, has launched the OceanX, the world's most powerful floating wind farm platform. This innovative turbine packs 16.6 megawatts of capacity and spans nearly 600 feet with its counter-rotating blades engineered to harness wind efficiently.
The OceanX is designed to withstand Category 5 hurricanes, withstanding winds up to 161 mph and wave heights of 98 feet. Key features include full yaw capability to turn into the wind regardless of direction and a single-point mooring system for stability.
With its ability to operate in depths greater than 115 feet, the OceanX taps into prime offshore wind resources. Its output is projected to generate around 54,000 megawatt-hours annually, enough to power 30,000 Chinese households, making a significant contribution to future energy demands.
