Crypto scammers hack OpenAI’s press account on X
Crypto scammers hacked OpenAI’s press X account, promoting a fictional token $OPENAI and linked to a phishing site.

Crypto scammers compromised OpenAI's press account on X, falsely promoting a blockchain token named $OPENAI on Monday. The scam message claimed all OpenAI users were eligible to claim a piece of $OPENAI, linking to a phishing site designed to mimic an official OpenAI webpage.
The fake site featured a prominent “CLAIM $OPENAI” button encouraging users to connect their cryptocurrency wallets, likely for credential theft. Previous similar hacks involved OpenAI CTO Mira Murati and researchers Jakub Pachocki and Jason Wei, using a 'crypto drainer' tool to funnel NFTs and tokens to scammers' wallets.
Such incidents are part of a growing trend of cryptocurrency scams, with Americans losing $5.6 billion in 2023, a 45% increase from 2022. The FBI predicts 2024 may be as bad or worse, with over 50,000 scams reported in the first half of the year, costing consumers about $2.5 billion.
