Dark mode could drain more battery than light mode, BBC study says

Dark mode can drain more battery than light mode, BBC says.

: A BBC study reveals that dark mode might drain more battery than light mode for most users. The research showed 80% of participants increased screen brightness in dark mode, resulting in higher energy consumption. The study suggests dimming screen brightness and using smaller screens for better energy efficiency.

A recent study by BBC's R&D team challenges the notion that dark mode saves battery life, revealing it might lead to higher battery consumption. The research included observing real users on the BBC Sounds homepage, where 80% increased their screen brightness in dark mode, creating a 'rebound effect' that led to increased energy use.

Zak Datson, a BBC engineer, noted the need for more accurate sustainability guidelines for technology use. The study found that energy advice often lacks solid backing and that changes like making websites responsive do not necessarily enhance energy efficiency.

As an alternative to dark mode, simply dimming the screen brightness can effectively conserve energy. The study also recommended using smaller screens and extending device longevity to minimize environmental costs, although certain devices can still benefit from dark mode under specific conditions.
