DeepSeek displaces ChatGPT as the App Store’s top app

DeepSeek, an AI app, overtakes ChatGPT as the top app, causing industry shifts.

: DeepSeek, a Chinese AI mobile app, has rapidly taken the No. 1 spot in the App Store, surpassing ChatGPT. The app's downloads doubled to 2.6 million in just a few days, largely thanks to its efficient AI model training methods. Despite its success, the app faced 'large-scale malicious' attacks, hindering registration outside China. Industry giants are examining DeepSeek's methods, as its rise puts pressure on other AI competitors.

DeepSeek, developed by a Chinese AI lab, has claimed the number one spot on the iOS App Store across 51 countries, overtaking the popular ChatGPT app. This surge in popularity is attributed to the release of efficient open AI models that were trained at a fraction of the typical cost, significantly impacting the tech sector, including a 17% drop in Nvidia's stock price.

The app has garnered 2.6 million downloads on both the App Store and Google Play, tripling its numbers from the previous week and outperforming other AI apps like Perplexity. Despite its prowess in the market, 23% of its downloads are from China, showing strong interest globally, with 15% in the United States and 6% in Egypt.

However, its quick rise has not come without challenges, as DeepSeek limited registrations outside China due to 'large-scale malicious' attacks. Tech companies, including Meta, are scrutinizing DeepSeek's training methods to understand its impact and possible competition in the AI space.
