Discord co-founder steps down as a new CEO is appointed with IPO preparations increasing
Discord's CEO steps down; new leader joins amid IPO talks.

Discord, a popular communication platform with a user base that has reached over 200 million monthly active participants, is undergoing a significant leadership change as it prepares for an Initial Public Offering (IPO). Co-founder and CEO Jason Citron, who helped establish Discord alongside Stanislav Vishnevskiy, has announced his decision to step down from the day-to-day responsibilities. In a public memo, Citron expressed that creating Discord was a fulfilling journey, largely inspired by his love for games such as Final Fantasy XI, which influenced the platform's design as a virtual living space for gamers.
Humam Sakhnini, bringing with him extensive experience from the gaming sector, will take over as CEO on April 28, 2025. Sakhnini's notable career includes his former role as chief strategy officer at Activision Blizzard, handling major franchises like Call of Duty and World of Warcraft. Furthermore, he contributed significantly to King's success as president from 2019 through early 2022, a background which positions him suitably to manage Discord's future developments.
Jason Citron will continue to aid Discord by guiding Sakhnini through the transition in an advisory role, as well as maintaining his position on the board of directors. This strategic shift in leadership is aligned with the corporation's aspirations to pursue an IPO, an idea that was publicly shared in March 2024. While the plan for an IPO was set during Citron's tenure, the actual execution will be managed under Sakhnini's leadership.
The origins of Discord trace back to May 2015 when it first launched with a primary focus on gamers. However, the platform has since diversified its audience. Enterprises and casual hobbyists alike have adopted Discord for discussions on various non-gaming subjects, thereby widening its influence beyond just the gaming community. This expansion demonstrates the platform's adaptability and relevance in modern communication.
The next phase for Discord under Humam Sakhnini’s guidance will likely involve refining its core features to cater to a broader audience and leveraging its substantial user base to attract potential investors. The planned IPO represents a new chapter for the company, potentially enhancing its market position in the communication software industry through increased financial growth and strategic innovation.
