ElevenLabs, whose tech was used for the fake Biden robocalls, partners with AI-detection company
ElevenLabs partners with Reality Defender to counter deepfakes after misuse of its AI tech in fake Biden robocalls.
ElevenLabs, known for its voice cloning technology, recently collaborated with Reality Defender following misuse of its AI tech in a robocall mimicking President Biden's voice. This 39-second robocall urged New Hampshire voters to save their votes for the November election, which was identified as a deepfake created using ElevenLabs' text-to-speech engine. The perpetrator was suspended from the service.
The partnership aims to bolster deepfake detection, giving Reality Defender access to ElevenLabs' voice cloning models and data. In return, ElevenLabs benefits from Reality Defender's detection tools to prevent future misuse of its products. The deal has no financial components, underscoring a commitment to ethical AI usage.
The incident prompted the FCC to propose making AI-generated voices in robocalls illegal under the TCPA, citing risks of misleading consumers. During his State of the Union address, Biden called for a ban on AI voice impersonations, reflecting growing concerns about AI's misuse. This collaboration emerges amidst increasing alarm over deepfakes in politics.
