Elon Musk reveals Elon Musk was wrong about Full Self-Driving

Elon Musk admits Tesla's older hardware can't support full self-driving without upgrades.

: Elon Musk acknowledged that Tesla cars with Hardware 3, sold between 2019 and 2023, require upgrades before they can support full self-driving. This contradicts earlier promises about the capabilities of Tesla's hardware for self-driving. Despite previous assurances, even Musk conceded the need for hardware improvements. Tesla plans to launch a pilot program for autonomous vehicles in Austin by June 2025.

Elon Musk admitted that Tesla vehicles with Hardware 3, sold between 2019 and 2023, need an upgrade to support unsupervised self-driving. This admission runs counter to earlier assertions by Musk that all Tesla vehicles since 2016 were equipped for full autonomy with a simple software switch.

Previously, Tesla claimed that the Hardware 2.0 and 2.5 computers were adequate, which was later proven false when Hardware 3 was released in 2019. Musk's recent statement underscores the fact that Tesla's earlier commitment that every car had the necessary hardware for autonomous driving without human intervention has not been fulfilled.

Despite this challenge, Tesla plans to begin a pilot program in Austin for autonomous driving with Hardware 4 by June 2025. Musk even described 2025 as potentially the most significant year in Tesla's history, indicating the importance of autonomous vehicles to the company's future.
