Epic and Disney want to make ‘what every Disney fan has ever wanted’

Epic and Disney team up for a shared 'persistent universe.'

: Epic Games and Disney are collaborating on an ambitious 'persistent universe' featuring characters from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars, connecting seamlessly with Fortnite. Not every Disney character will carry weapons in this universe, as brand guidelines will be respected. Disney invested $1.5 billion in Epic to facilitate this project, viewing it as a mutually beneficial partnership.

Epic Games and Disney announced a groundbreaking collaboration earlier this year, aiming to create a 'persistent universe' that will integrate characters from major Disney franchises including Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars. This new venture will be linked with Fortnite, but not every Disney character will feature traditional Fortnite gameplay, such as bearing weapons. Players will be able to access the universe through either Disney or Fortnite platforms, connecting to shared cosmetic options and social features.

Disney has entrusted Epic Games with this project due to Epic's established success in managing Disney's franchises within Fortnite. Disney had dissolved its own metaverse division last year, making their $1.5 billion investment in Epic a strategic decision. The shared universe aims to maintain brand fidelity and cater to an 'E for everyone' audience while still allowing popular characters like Mr. and Mrs. Incredible to be playable in Fortnite.

The persistent universe's launch date remains unspecified, but Epic's EVP Saxs Persson expressed enthusiasm, highlighting the collaboration as a long-awaited wish for Disney fans. The partnership combines Epic's ecosystem capabilities with Disney's rich franchise portfolio, promising a unique and exciting digital experience for fans across the globe.
