Google launches a free AI coding assistant with very high usage caps
Google unveils Gemini Code Assist for coding, offering immense usage limits compared to competitors.

Google has unveiled Gemini Code Assist, a new free AI coding assistant designed for developers. This tool offers an impressive 180,000 code completions per month, dwarfing the 2,000 completions provided by GitHub's Copilot free plan. Furthermore, Gemini Code Assist allows for 240 chat requests daily, making it nearly five times more generous in daily allowances compared to its rivals, enhancing its appeal to individual developers.
The AI assistant is powered by a specialized version of Google's Gemini 2.0 AI model, adapted for coding tasks. It can be integrated with popular coding platforms like VS Code and JetBrains, supporting a variety of programming languages. Google's model boasts a 128,000-token context window, substantially larger than the competition, enabling it to process and reason through more complex codebases effectively.
In addition to individual support, Google also introduced Gemini Code Assist for GitHub, aimed at automating bug detection in pull requests. These advancements mark Google's strategic push to compete with Microsoft and GitHub in developer tools. By offering these tools for free, Google aims to attract early-career developers with the hope that they will eventually transition to paid enterprise plans.
