How effective are Switch 2's mouse controls? Eurogamer's verdict from the big reveal event
Switch 2's mouse controls are awkward and involve a claw-like grip.

At the recent Nintendo Switch 2 reveal event in Paris, Eurogamer's Robert Purchese reported on the innovative yet divisive mouse-like controls of the new Joy-Con. Tested extensively by Tom and Ian from Eurogamer, these controls were featured in games such as 'Drag x Drive' and 'Metroid Prime 4 Beyond'. However, despite the technology behind the controls, both critics found them challenging due to the unique hand positioning required. Tom observed that transitioning to this control scheme was difficult, noting, "You have to twist and turn, almost similar to being in a wheelchair, and do this movement yourself." He also described the physical strain, sharing, "I came out of it and my arms were aching."
Ian echoed Tom’s sentiments, expressing skepticism about the practicality of using such controls in a relaxing gaming environment at home. He conceded that while the mouse function was responsive, its design did not facilitate a comfortable ergonomic experience. He questioned the practicality, stating, "But as Tom said, who wants to play their console in front of a desk? You're going to want to relax on your sofa." While the Joy-Con's mouse mode offered precise aiming aid as seen in 'Metroid Prime 4', both reviewers were concerned about the comfort factor due to its narrow and rectangular shape.
Despite the mixed feelings about the mouse controls, other game demonstrations at the event were more positively received. 'Mario Kart World' was identified as a highlight, described as having a refreshed racing tournament mode reminiscent of Battle Royale, which significantly enhanced the enjoyment of the existing series. 'Donkey Kong Bananza' also shone with its groundbreaking level destruction mechanics, validating the power of the new Switch 2 hardware. Tom noted, "This is something that definitely feels new and definitely feels like you need new hardware to play it."
The Parisian event gave attendees a limited hands-on experience with business-critical features and games, propelling discussion on both the appeal and drawbacks of the new Switch 2. The release date for the console is set for 5th June in the UK, with pre-orders already scarce. Eurogamer supporters received access to an exclusive podcast, exploring detailed conversations and insights about the Switch 2’s attributes, pricing dynamics, and design quality.
As the Switch 2 approaches its release, excitement builds not only for its gaming enhancements but also for future opportunities to test its mouse capabilities further, such as at the follow-up event in London. Whether these controls will revolutionize the gaming experience or remain a niche feature remains to be seen, but they certainly reflect Nintendo's ongoing commitment to innovation and unconventional design approaches.
