India lauds Chinese AI lab DeepSeek, plans to host its models on local servers
India will host DeepSeek's AI models locally, promoting domestic AI growth with discounted computing facilities.

India is set to host DeepSeek's large language models on domestic servers, adhering to strict data localization requirements. IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw praised DeepSeek's $5.5 million model, despite past bans on over 300 Chinese apps and services over security concerns.
The Indian AI Compute Facility will support this hosting, equipped with 18,693 GPUs, including Nvidia H100 and H200 models. The facility will offer significant computing discounts, lowering costs by up to 47% for high-precision tasks, expected to begin operations soon.
India aims to drive domestic AI development alongside hosting foreign models, with plans for $30 billion investments in data infrastructure. Reliance intends to construct a 3-gigawatt data center, and Vaishnaw anticipates rapid indigenous AI model development, overseen by a regulatory body utilizing a hub-and-spoke model.
