Intel says integrating RAM into Lunar Lake SoC was a mistake, might abandon desktop GPUs again
Intel reconsiders GPU and RAM strategies after Lunar Lake setback.
: Intel admits integrating RAM into Lunar Lake SoC was a mistake, impacting sales badly. Future laptop designs will revert to using RAM sticks, moving away from integrated memory. The company is also considering discontinuing its desktop GPU efforts amid market challenges and financial struggles.
Intel has acknowledged that the decision to integrate RAM into its Lunar Lake SoC was a misstep. The built-in memory, limiting consumer flexibility, contributed to poor financial performance.
During its Q3 2024 call, Intel revealed plans to revert to traditional RAM sticks for future models like Panther Lake and Nova Lake. CEO Pat Gelsinger confirmed this shift, stating Lunar Lake was a niche project that expanded unexpectedly.
Intel is also evaluating its GPU roadmap, with potential cutbacks or cessation after struggling to gain market traction. While its Arc Battlemage GPUs are expected soon, their success may determine future GPU plans.
