It's 2024, and Ubisoft has just launched an NFT game
Ubisoft launches NFT game, Champions Tactics, despite backlash.
In 2024, Ubisoft quietly released an NFT-based game titled Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles. This web3 game, unveiled by IGN, is a free-to-play PvP tactical RPG where players collect virtual figurines for turn-based combat squads. Unlike other games, its fundamental character acquisition relies on purchasing NFTs, either with crypto or in-game currency.
The new game's marketplace lists figures priced from $7 to an astounding $63,000 for a character named Swift Zealot. There are 2,732 Champions available, with one priced at $25,000, while the remaining are $5,000 or less. The pay-to-win model is evident due to the benefits offered by high-priced characters, which contradicts the cosmetic approach of other F2P games.
Despite the NFT market decline and general skepticism, there are consumers ready to buy virtual assets. Ubisoft's persistence with blockchain ventures continues despite previous failures, like NFTs in Ghost Recon Breakpoint in 2021, which were unpopular. Despite briefly halting its NFT push in April 2022, Ubisoft remains undeterred in pursuing its blockchain ambitions.
