JetBrains launches Junie, a new AI coding agent for its IDEs

JetBrains introduces AI coding agent Junie, integrated into its IDEs to enhance development efficiency.

: JetBrains, known for its IntelliJ IDE and Kotlin language, introduced Junie, an AI coding agent for developers. Junie achieves a 53.6% completion rate on the SWE-Bench benchmark but trails top models. Despite this, its integration into JetBrains IDEs could offer advantages, maintaining user control over task delegation. Junie is in early access, working on Linux and Mac, with availability for WebStorm soon.

JetBrains has launched a new AI coding assistant named Junie, designed to assist users of their IDEs, notably IntelliJ and PyCharm, in handling routine developer tasks. Junie's abilities include understanding project contexts and generating code to expedite development processes, paired with control mechanisms ensuring developers remain in charge.

According to the SWE-Bench Verified benchmark, Junie successfully completes 53.6% of 500 benchmark tasks. While this score is below the current leader 'Programmer O1 crosscheck5' with 64.6%, JetBrains describes Junie’s performance as promising, highlighting its potential to improve code quality through integration with JetBrains' IDEs.

Currently, Junie is accessible only via an early-access program and operates on both Linux and Mac platforms. Initially limited to IntelliJ IDEA Ultimate and PyCharm Professional, there are plans to extend support to WebStorm, demonstrating JetBrains' commitment to evolving its AI-assisted development tools.
