Leak: Valve is making a Steam Controller 2 and a ‘Roy’ for its Deckard

Valve is developing a new Steam Controller and VR controller named 'Roy'.

: Valve is reportedly working on a new Steam Controller, codenamed 'Ibex', and a VR controller called 'Roy' for its Deckard headset. The Steam Controller 2, which is being made for mass production, aims to offer enhanced features over its predecessor. The 'Roy' controller is designed with VR and traditional gaming in mind, featuring a D-pad, bumpers, and ABXY buttons. Valve has yet to officially confirm these developments.

Valve is advancing the development of the Steam Controller 2, named 'Ibex', with plans for mass production. This comes after expressing two years ago their desire for a successor to the original, highly customizable Steam Controller, which set the stage for the Steam Deck handheld PC. Credible sources have revealed these plans to keen Valve observer, Brad Lynch.

In addition to 'Ibex', Valve is also reportedly preparing a VR controller dubbed 'Roy', which forms part of its 'Deckard' VR headset project. Leaked SteamVR code suggests that 'Roy' could function both as a VR device and a traditional gamepad, equipped with a D-pad, bumpers, and ABXY buttons. It's speculated that 'Roy' could be released concurrently with the 'Deckard' headset.

Despite these developments, Valve has not confirmed nor denied the rumors, opting as usual to reveal products closer to launch. As confirmed, they have also collaborated with Hori on a licensed Steam gamepad coming to the US market, yet this won't function as a direct successor. Enthusiasts should take note of 'Roy's' moniker, a nod to the iconic 'tears in rain' reference.
