LG shows off new stretchable display that can expand its size by 50%

LG unveils a stretchable display expanding up to 50%, improving elongation and durability.

: LG Display has introduced a groundbreaking stretchable display that can expand its size by 50%. Demonstrated at LG Science Park, the 12-inch screen stretches to 18 inches, maintaining 100 PPI and full RGB color. It features enhanced silicon materials and a micro-LED light for durability. These displays can adhere to irregular surfaces like clothing, offering potential in fashion, wearables, and automotive industries.

LG Display has made significant strides in the technology of pliable screens, showcasing a stretchable display that can extend its size by an impressive 50%. Demonstrated at LG Science Park, with over 100 people in attendance, the new prototype boasts the highest elongation rate in the industry, transforming from 12 inches to 18 inches while maintaining 100 PPI and full RGB color.

To achieve this level of flexibility and durability, LG Display introduced improvements with a special silicon substrate used in contact lenses and a new wiring design. Additionally, a micro-LED light source enhances the screen's longevity, allowing it to withstand over 10,000 stretches and endure extreme conditions like varying temperatures and external shocks.

The potential applications for this technology extend beyond just rollable phones, despite its lower resolution compared to current handsets. LG envisions stretchable displays adhering to uneven surfaces such as clothing and skin, highlighting uses in industries like fashion, wearables, and automotive, including concepts like automotive panels and wearable displays for firefighters.
