Linux Foundation offers a neutral solution to the WordPress crisis
Linux Foundation offers a neutral solution to WordPress community issues.

The Linux Foundation has introduced a neutral solution to the ongoing WordPress governance crisis with the launch of the FAIR Package Manager. This decentralized platform allows for the distribution of WordPress core, plugins, themes, and translations under an open governance model. It aims to reduce reliance on WordPress.org and prevent any single entity from dominating the ecosystem.
The initiative arose amid tensions between Automattic, led by Matt Mullenweg, and major stakeholders like WP Engine. The FAIR project provides a vendor-neutral alternative, backed by prominent contributors including Carrie Dils, Mika Epstein, and Ryan McCue. It uses a federated repository model, allowing multiple mirrors to host content for increased trust and redundancy.
FAIR can be used as a plugin or as a standalone WordPress distribution. It gives developers and hosts the freedom to choose their update sources, improving flexibility. Additionally, it aligns with data privacy laws like GDPR by minimizing unwanted tracking and telemetry in the update process.
Industry support has been strong. Jim Zemlin of the Linux Foundation praised the project for its potential to stabilize the WordPress ecosystem. Endorsements also came from leaders at Crowd Favorite, Pantheon, and Yoast founder Joost de Valk, who noted improvements in supply chain security and governance transparency.
Matt Mullenweg welcomed the initiative but voiced concerns about potential complexity and security risks from decentralized update systems. However, FAIR is not a fork—it operates as a complementary layer using official WordPress APIs, making it compatible with existing infrastructure.
