Major Windows BSOD issue takes banks, airlines, and broadcasters offline
A faulty CrowdStrike update caused a global Windows BSOD issue, affecting banks, airlines, and broadcasters.
A significant Windows BSOD issue is causing disruptions globally, affecting banks, airlines, and TV broadcasters due to a faulty update from cybersecurity provider CrowdStrike. The issue has led to thousands of affected PCs and servers going offline and stuck in a recovery boot loop, rendering them unable to start properly.
Initial reports came from Australian banks and airlines, and it quickly spread to Europe with Sky News unable to broadcast morning bulletins and Ryanair facing delays. The FAA is assisting airlines with ground stops, and the issue has even affected 911 call centers in Alaska and caused an Indian airline to use handwritten boarding passes.
CrowdStrike CEO George Kurtz stated the issue stemmed from a kernel-level driver update and is not a security incident. Though they reverted the update, fixing affected machines involves complex steps like booting into safe mode and deleting system files, making it a long day for IT admins.
