Meta announces Movie Gen, an AI-powered video generator

Meta unveils Movie Gen, an AI video tool allowing clip creation and editing.

: Meta introduces Movie Gen, an AI-powered video generator capable of creating and editing high-definition videos from text prompts. This follows OpenAI's Sora, but with no public access yet as Meta cites production costs and time constraints. Creatives voice concerns over AI's impact on their fields, as shown by involvement in recent Hollywood strikes. AI's development sparks debates over ethical use and content training sources.

Meta has announced the launch of Movie Gen, an innovative video generator driven by artificial intelligence that allows the creation and editing of high-definition clips using text prompts. Despite this development, Movie Gen is not yet available for public use due to its expensive generation time and intricate processing requirements, as noted by Meta’s Chief Product Officer, Chris Cox.

In comparison, OpenAI's video model, Sora, introduced prior in February, is also not yet accessible to the wider public. Movie Gen can not only create new videos but edit existing footage, changing backgrounds and introducing new elements by processing text instructions, as evidenced by examples such as altering runners to be seen in various costumes or scenes.

The advent of AI-powered video generation tools, like Movie Gen, has raised concerns among creatives such as filmmakers, photographers, and writers about the potential impacts on their work and livelihood. These worries have been highlighted by recent historic strikes organized by groups like SAG-AFTRA and WGA, protesting against the implications of AI technology in the creative field.
