Meta releases Llama 4, a new series of flagship AI models
Meta launches four Llama 4 models with Scout, Maverick, and Behemoth, expanding AI capabilities.

Meta's Llama 4 release introduces significant advancements with three models: Llama 4 Scout, Llama 4 Maverick, and Behemoth. These are designed to enhance computational efficiency through a mixture of experts (MoE) architecture, categorizing data processing into specialized 'expert' models. This design reduces computational strain, allowing Maverick's 400 billion total parameters to function with only 17 billion active parameters, and Scout with 109 billion total and 17 billion active parameters.
Meta deployed the Llama 4 models as part of a push to outclass competition from DeepSeek and their emerging AI capabilities, which reportedly perform on par or better than Meta's former Llama benchmarks. Rumors suggest Meta formed 'war rooms' to decipher DeepSeek's cost-effective model deployment strategies involving their R1 and V3 models.
Scout and Maverick are accessible via Llama.com and partners like Hugging Face, while Behemoth still undergoes training. Meta outlines usage limitations, barring entities within the EU, reflecting regional governance hurdles, and mandates special licensing for companies exceeding 700 million monthly active users. The company also retrofitted Meta AI enhancements in 40 countries, although multimodal features currently remain U.S.-centric.
Llama 4 models don't fully accommodate reasoning akin to OpenAI’s models like o1 and o3-mini. While this means Llama 4 aims to offer unbiased responses without hesitance over controversial themes, it doesn't specialize in 'fact-checking' or generating thorough answer evaluations. Meta claims that it's made strides toward models that address politically sensitive topics without preconception.
Concerning political neutrality, the updated models challenge accusations from figures like Elon Musk regarding AI bias toward progressive political ideologies. The persistence of AI bias remains a technical hurdle. Companies such as OpenAI have been recalibrating their models, striving for broader answer ranges and handling delicate subjects. This backdrop highlights ongoing challenges and Meta’s position in confronting those allegations within the AI space.
