India has become the largest market for Meta AI usage, largely powered by WhatsApp's 500 million users. Meta's CFO Susan Li confirmed this milestone during the company's second-quarter earnings call, noting billions of queries since the AI's launch in India just a few months ago. Meta AI, initially launched in the U.S., has quickly expanded to over a dozen countries, including a full rollout in India after their general elections in June. The company faced cultural challenges with AI-generated content, prompting adjustments to create balanced outcomes for different religious jokes.

Meta recently added support for more languages such as French, German, Hindi, and Spanish, making Meta AI accessible in 22 countries. This expansion comes amid increased AI engagements on WhatsApp, which saw positive retention and engagement metrics in India. Meta's future AI ambitions include the Llama 4 model, which will require nearly 10 times the computing power used for Llama 3, signaling ongoing and significant investment in AI.

Beyond AI, Meta's social networks also recorded promising metrics, particularly with Threads nearing 200 million users. The company’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, discussed the growing engagement of Facebook among young adults in the U.S. Despite these advancements, the cultural attunements in India remain a focal point for Meta, highlighting the importance of local relevance and appropriate content moderation for its diverse user base.
