Microsoft ends HoloLens 2 production, with no successor in sight
Microsoft discontinues HoloLens 2 production with no successor planned, ending its mixed reality venture with continued software support until 2027.
Microsoft has halted production of its HoloLens 2 mixed reality headset, signaling a potential conclusion to the HoloLens product line. No successor to the HoloLens 2 is currently planned, and the device will only be available until existing inventory is depleted.
The HoloLens 2, which debuted in early 2019 for $3,500, faced competition from other companies like Magic Leap, which targeted the same enterprise market. Originally, a third iteration was in development, but this project was canceled in 2021.
Starting from 2028, Microsoft will cease software support for HoloLens 2, although the original HoloLens will lose support by the end of December this year. The discontinuation comes amid a period of reduced investment in Microsoft's mixed reality segment and industry-wide challenges for these types of devices.
