miHoYo plans to build “Shanghai Akihabara” as part of new headquarters expansion
miHoYo is planning a 'Shanghai Akihabara' with various ACG facilities, tied to their new headquarters.
miHoYo, the developer behind Genshin Impact, is planning to build a 'Shanghai-version Akihabara' alongside its new headquarters in Shanghai’s Caohejing district. The area is expected to be one kilometer long and feature 2,000 square meters of facilities related to anime, comics, and gaming (ACG) culture, based on Weibo photos posted by @龍宮輝夜.
The proposed Shanghai Akihabara will include gaming-IP sculptures, comic merchandise stores, VR experience stores, performance stages, a multifunctional theater, an anime museum, and an AI digital human virtual experience store. This initiative is aimed at boosting Shanghai’s role as a global ACG hub, strengthening miHoYo’s connection with its fanbase, and promoting its gaming culture.
MiHoYo purchased its new headquarters for RMB 1.077 billion ($150 million) last year and plans to renovate business buildings across the street for RMB 99 million ($13.67 million). The new headquarters spans 148,000 square meters, and the workforce could potentially reach up to 10,000 employees in the future.
