MSI shows off hot-swappable PCIe Gen 5 SSD expansion card that looks like a video card

MSI reveals PCIe Gen 5 SSD expansion card with hot-swappable M.2 slots and integrated cooling fan at Computex.

: MSI introduced the M.2 Xpander-Aero Slider Gen5, a PCIe-to-M.2 expansion card that resembles a graphics card, at Computex. The innovative card allows users to hot-swap M.2 SSDs via the rear I/O panel and includes an Aero cooling fan to mitigate thermal throttling. The product may be bundled with future high-end MEG motherboards, with no specific availability details announced yet.

MSI unveiled a new storage accessory at Computex, the M.2 Xpander-Aero Slider Gen5, which is a dual-slot PCIe-to-M.2 expansion card designed to resemble a graphics card. This unique product enables users to hot-swap M.2 SSDs through the rear I/O panel without needing to open their PCs, making PC upgrades and maintenance more convenient.

The card supports up to two PCIe Gen5 M.2 22110 drives and features a large Aero cooling fan. This fan can automatically adjust its speed based on whether SSDs are plugged in, addressing potential thermal issues that can occur with high-speed Gen5 drives. Additionally, there is a manual on/off switch for the fan, allowing users to manage cooling for lower-speed drives that do not generate as much heat.

Although the M.2 Xpander-Aero Slider Gen5 offers a compelling solution for easier SSD management, there is no confirmed release date or detailed availability information at this time. It is anticipated to be bundled with future high-end MEG motherboards, hinting at MSI's strategy to integrate this innovative feature into its product lineup. The design may pave the way for motherboards with integrated M.2 sliding slots in the future.
