Musk dodged Brazil’s X ban by ‘coincidence,’ says Cloudflare CEO

Cloudflare CEO says X's return in Brazil was unintentional, due to switching cloud providers, not defying the ban.

: Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince insists X’s return in Brazil happened by coincidence, through switching cloud providers from Fastly to Cloudflare. This disrupted the Brazilian ISPs’ block mechanism. Prince refutes claims that X aimed to circumvent the ban. Brazilian authorities are now working with Cloudflare to reinstate the block.

Cloudflare's CEO Matthew Prince stated that X’s reappearance in Brazil was coincidental and not a deliberate attempt to bypass the country’s ban. X had transitioned from Fastly to Cloudflare for cloud computing, inadvertently changing their IP addresses and disrupting the block imposed by Brazilian ISPs.

Prince emphasized that neither Cloudflare nor X had planned this outcome, highlighting it as an unintended consequence of switching IT vendors. He criticized Brazil’s blocking method as ineffective and noted that X could have easily changed IP addresses without switching to Cloudflare if they had intended to dodge the ban.

Despite X's previous efforts to circumvent the ban via Starlink satellites, Brazilian regulators confirmed to The New York Times that Cloudflare has been cooperative in helping to restore the block. Prince maintained that the entire situation was unforeseen and blamed on Brazil’s inadequate blocking strategy.
