Mysterious 48GB Nvidia RTX 4090D GPU pops up on Chinese cloud service for rent
A 48GB RTX 4090D and 32GB RTX 4080 Super GPU emerged on a Chinese cloud service.
Nvidia recently introduced the GeForce RTX 4090D and RTX 4080 Super, with the former being a sanctions-compliant variation of the original RTX 4090, introduced in December. In January, the RTX 4080 Super followed, offering a slightly faster performance for $999, undercutting its counterpart by $200.
An AI enthusiast discovered incredibly modded versions of these GPUs in China, specifically a 48GB RTX 4090D and a 32GB RTX 4080 Super. These GPUs are now available for rent on AutoDL, a cloud computing platform, at an extremely low price of $0.03 per hour for the 32GB RTX 4080 Super.
Modifying these GPUs to double their VRAM required extensive PCB re-engineering, rather than simply swapping VRAM chips. This led to the 48GB RTX 4090D being priced around $2,500, a premium over Nvidia’s standard model’s MSRP of $1,815, reflecting the high demand for such performance-driven graphics cards in AI and professional workloads.
