Netflix will drop a new multiplayer game when Squid Game season 2 premieres this year
Netflix reveals a multiplayer game launching with Squid Game season 2 and highlights ad-supported tier growth in its quarterly earnings report.
Netflix announced its plans to release a new multiplayer game inspired by Squid Game, timed to coincide with the premiere of the show's second season later this year. This was announced during the company's quarterly earnings report, though no additional details about the game's style were provided.
The original Squid Game series, which became an international sensation in 2021, has already led to various spinoffs for Netflix. These include a virtual reality version, an in-person pop-up experience in Los Angeles, and a British-produced reality TV show called Squid Game: The Challenge, which is far less lethal than the source material.
Another key insight from the quarterly report is the significant growth of Netflix's ad-supported tier. This tier accounts for 45% of new sign-ups in markets it is available and has grown by 34% in the second quarter of 2024. The basic plan option is being phased out in some regions, including Canada, the UK, and soon the US and France.
