Nintendo seeks to subpoena Reddit for details on piracy group members
Nintendo subpoenas Reddit for details on members of pirate subreddit.
Nintendo has taken legal steps to subpoena business records from Reddit, seeking to identify members and moderators involved in the r/SwitchPirates subreddit, which boasts over 217,000 members. The action follows allegations against James 'Archbox' Williams, accused of operating major hubs selling pirated Nintendo games through Pirate Shops and moderating the subreddit.
The subpoenas are directed at companies like Name Cheap, Go Daddy, Tucows, Cloudflare, Github, Discord, Google, and Reddit. These actions aim to gather user records to trace individuals associated with Williams to further Nintendo's infringement claims. Nintendo clarifies that their pursuit is against those illegally selling modded consoles and cartridge copies, not regular subreddit members.
Nintendo's recent legal actions have not been limited to subreddit moderation alone. Earlier this year, it filed action against Tropic Haze, creators of the Yuzu emulator, claiming DMCA violations, and reached a $2.4 million settlement to cease operations. These efforts underscore Nintendo's ongoing battle against the infringement of its intellectual property rights in the gaming sector.
