OpenAI cancels its o3 AI model in favor of a ‘unified’ next-gen release

OpenAI cancels o3 in favor of GPT-5, aiming for a unified AI approach.

: OpenAI has canceled the planned release of its o3 model, opting instead to focus on the development of GPT-5, a comprehensive next-generation AI model. Announced by CEO Sam Altman, GPT-5 will integrate the technologies of o3 and other OpenAI innovations into ChatGPT and its API. Before GPT-5's release, GPT-4.5, code-named 'Orion,' will serve as the final 'non-chain-of-thought model.' OpenAI faces increased competition, notably from DeepSeek's R1 model.

OpenAI has shifted its strategy by canceling the anticipated release of its o3 model, instead directing efforts toward GPT-5, as announced by CEO Sam Altman. GPT-5 aims to unify OpenAI’s AI advancements, including o3, within the ChatGPT platform, improving simplicity and performance of AI usage.

Before the introduction of GPT-5, OpenAI will launch GPT-4.5, also known as Orion, in the coming weeks, marking the company’s last non-chain-of-thought model. This decision arrives amidst OpenAI’s recognition that competitors like DeepSeek, with its R1 model, have narrowed the technological gap in AI research.

Altman highlights that GPT-5 will feature multiple enhancements such as voice, search, and deep research capabilities, offering different intelligence levels for ChatGPT subscribers. While GPT-4.5 has faced some developmental issues, GPT-5 is expected to better position OpenAI in the competitive AI landscape.
