Gabor Cselle, a seasoned entrepreneur and co-founder of Pebble, has recently been hired by OpenAI to contribute to a mysterious project. Known for previously selling his startups reMail and Namo Media to Google and Twitter, respectively, Cselle has amassed significant experience over the years in product management and incubation.
Cselle's journey with Pebble, initially known as T2, was marked by efforts in safety and moderation within its microblogging platform. Despite having a small yet loyal following and financial backing from notable investors like Rich Miner, Pebble faced hurdles in achieving substantial growth. The project was ultimately shelved last year, later making a comeback as a Mastodon instance.
Parallel to Cselle's announcement, Anthropic, an OpenAI competitor, has also made a strategic recruitment by bringing in Alex Rodrigues, founder of the autonomous trucking firm Embark. Rodrigues, who has a background in overseeing significant business transitions like SPAC mergers, will serve as an AI safety researcher, contributing to Anthropic's growth in this field.
