Perplexity launches its own freemium ‘deep research’ product

Perplexity unveils free Deep Research tool for in-depth AI research.

: Perplexity released a new research tool called Deep Research, offering in-depth answers with citations, available for free on the web with limited queries. This contrasts with OpenAI, which charges $200 per month for its version, and Google's Gemini AI also offers a similar feature. Perplexity's Deep Research excels in speed, performing tasks in under three minutes and achieving a 21.1% on Humanity's Last Exam test.

Perplexity has introduced its Deep Research product, available on the web with plans to expand to Mac, iOS, and Android. This tool, which is free for limited daily use, aims to generate in-depth research reports that can be exported or shared, featuring iterative learning and reasoning processes that mimic human research methods.

Compared with Google's Gemini AI and OpenAI's research agent, all offering similarly named features, Perplexity's Deep Research scored 21.1% in Humanity’s Last Exam. While OpenAI's version charges $200 monthly, Perplexity offers users unlimited queries under a paid subscription and promises faster task completion.

Reports further indicate Perplexity's advantage lies in speed and accessibility for casual researchers, whereas OpenAI leads in analytical depth and Google integrates well with productivity tools. Concerns remain about relying heavily on AI for research, potentially stifling creativity and idea generation as highlighted by The Economist.
