Revisiting 19th-century Paris with VR
VR revisits 19th-century Paris, celebrating Impressionism's anniversary through immersive experiences.
A collaborative effort between French startup Excurio and the Musée d’Orsay along with Eclipso has birthed an innovative VR experience, 'Tonight With The Impressionists, Paris 1874.' Celebrating the 150th anniversary of the first Impressionist art exhibition, this project guides visitors through virtual renditions of 19th-century Parisian streets and crucial historical locations tied to Impressionist history.
The experience, launched in France and Atlanta, has now opened at the Eclipso Center in New York. Participants don VR headsets to explore an 11,000-square-foot room, witnessing transformed virtual environments like apartments and art galleries. Despite the absence of physical props, the VR narrative creates a captivating illusion, like sharing a balcony with Claude Monet as he paints.
Excurio's experience requires only VR headsets, allowing for large groups of free-roaming participants. Offering a narrative-driven exploration, it minimizes collision risks with staggered entry times. However, the 45-minute session might induce eye strain for VR newcomers, yet remains a unique and enlightening experience for art enthusiasts and VR technology admirers.
