Riot Games is cracking down on players’ off-platform conduct

Riot Games updates TOS to penalize off-platform misconduct affecting content creators.

: Riot Games has revised its Terms of Service to address players' behavior outside its games. Specifically, the new rules aim at curbing offensive conduct on streaming platforms and social media involving its titles. Players can face penalties up to a Riot-wide ban if found in violation. The company emphasizes it will not actively search for infractions but will act on reports.

Riot Games has expanded its Terms of Service to include rules about player conduct that takes place outside the game environment. These changes allow for penalties on players for inappropriate behavior in streams and social media interactions related to Riot's games. Offenders can face penalties, suspensions, or riots-wide bans based on the severity of their actions.

Riot Games made it clear that it would not proactively monitor external platforms for violations. Instead, players are encouraged to report any misconduct they observe during live streams that feature Riot Games content. The new rule, known as "Off-Platform conduct," ensures that hate speech and other offensive behavior, if corroborated, are reprimanded as though they occurred within the game.

Acknowledging the ongoing issue, Riot Games has been working on improving accountability and discipline within its community. Senior Vice President Anna Donlon previously noted the necessity for stricter measures to safeguard their players, supplemented by manual reviews for better enforcement. Similarly, platforms like Twitch have also implemented policies to manage and penalize harmful behaviors in response to community concerns.
