Sega mulls Netflix-style subscription service for its game library
Sega considers a game subscription service, possibly withdrawing classics.
Sega is contemplating launching a subscription service similar to Netflix for its game library, according to Shuji Utsumi, the company's president. This potential service would compete with existing platforms such as Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus and might provide a unified access point for Sega's renowned titles.
Earlier, Sega withdrew over 60 classics from digital storefronts on PC and consoles, leading to speculation that these games may reappear on the new subscription service. However, there are concerns among industry experts that Sega might eventually remove its games from current platforms to make its subscription more appealing.
Sega's leadership under Utsumi is also pivoting back to the core ethos of the brand, parallel to exploring the subscription model. Utsumi shared that the company is working on an exciting new Sonic game, but he refrained from giving further details about its potential connection to previous series.
