Sony axes two more live service games

Sony cancels two live-service games from Bluepoint and Bend Studio without studio closures, amidst industry struggles.

: Sony has canceled two live-service games, developed by Bluepoint and Bend Studio. Despite these cancellations, neither studio will be closed. Sony confirmed this information to Bloomberg and is currently determining future projects for the studios. This follows previous setbacks, such as the cancellation of Concord and job cuts affecting 1,120 employees in 2024.

Sony recently pulled the plug on two live-service games, one developed by Bluepoint Games and the other by Bend Studio. Bluepoint, known for its acclaimed remakes of Demon's Souls and Shadow of the Colossus, had been working on this project since its involvement with God of War Ragnarok ended in 2022.

Meanwhile, Bend Studio, famous for Days Gone, faced its own game cancellation. While Sony has not announced any studio closures, the potential for layoffs remains uncertain. A Sony spokesperson mentioned ongoing discussions to determine future projects for both studios.

These cancellations are part of a larger pattern of setbacks in Sony's games as a service strategy, following the downfall of Concord in September 2024. Despite a successful release of Helldivers II last year, Sony has reportedly axed several live-service games in recent times, even one centered around Spider-Man. The company cut approximately 1,120 jobs across various studios, such as Bungie and Insomniac, in 2024.
