Sony enables cloud streaming for PlayStation Portal via an update – with a caveat

Sony adds cloud streaming to PlayStation Portal for subscribers.

: Sony released an update for the PlayStation Portal, allowing it to stream over 120 cloud games without a PS5. This feature is exclusive to PlayStation Plus Premium members, costing up to $159.99 annually. Users need a 7 Mbps connection for 720p quality, with certain features unavailable during the beta.

Sony has introduced a significant update for the PlayStation Portal, which now allows users to stream games directly from the cloud, expanding its functionality beyond streaming from a PS5 via Wi-Fi. Notably, this enhancement removes the need for a PlayStation 5 console, offering users access to over 120 games from the PS Plus Game Catalog, such as Ghost of Tsushima and Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales.

However, this new streaming capability comes with the condition that it is only accessible to PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers. The subscription is priced at $17.99 monthly, $49.99 quarterly, or $159.99 annually. Additionally, a minimum internet connection of 7 Mbps is required for streaming at 720p, while 13 Mbps ensures 1080p quality.

Certain limitations accompany this beta release, as some features like Game Trials and party voice chat will not be immediately available. Also, only PS5 games can be streamed, excluding PS4 and PS3 titles, and the beta doesn’t support child accounts. Despite these limitations, the PlayStation Portal has seen substantial success in the U.S., with sales far exceeding Sony's initial forecasts.
