Sony former exec says the company is "printing money" by releasing PlayStation games on PC

Sony profits greatly from PC ports of PlayStation games.

: Shuhei Yoshida, a former Sony exec, reveals that Sony is generating significant profits by porting PlayStation games to PC, as it expands their audience at minimal cost. This initiative aids in funding new AAA projects and taps into large markets like China. While many games are heading to platforms like Steam, Bloodborne remains an exception despite demand.

Shuhei Yoshida, who spent over 30 years at Sony, has shed light on Sony's profitable strategy of releasing PlayStation games on PC. By doing so, Sony not only reaches a broader audience but also lowers costs compared to developing entirely new titles, thus making substantial profits likened to 'printing money.'

Despite the availability of many PlayStation games on platforms such as Steam and GOG.com, some titles like Bloodborne remain unavailable on PC, to the frustration of its fanbase. Yoshida mentioned that although PS4 emulation is progressing, FromSoftware's CEO, Hidetaka Miyazaki, may take independent action in porting Bloodborne to PC without Sony's direct involvement.

Sony's strategy is particularly beneficial in areas like China, where the console market is still developing. By focusing on PC conversions, Sony is able to tap into this vast market, with Yoshida affirming that future successful releases in China will likely depend on PC availability.
